Missions

A mission is a small project: it names what to build or find, links the page and the tool to use, and ends with acceptance criteria that say when it is done. Some criteria ask for a number and check it against the value of one of the site’s examples; the others you tick off yourself. The missions build on each other from M1 to M8, and M9 asks you to write a page for this site.

Your ticks are kept only in this browser, in its local storage: nothing is sent anywhere, and clearing the browser’s site data clears them. The same mission in another language shares the ticks.

The missions, and your progress in this browser
MissionWhat you doProgress
M1 · Derive and verify the buckDerive the buck's conversion ratio and inductor ripple by volt-second balance, check them against the equation catalogue and the buck example, and watch the catalogue's checks catch a wrong value.
M2 · Find the critical K in the simulatorFind the load at which the buck and the boost leave CCM by watching the simulated inductor current, and compare the K there with the critical value the equations give.
M3 · Locate the boost's right-half-plane zeroCompute the right-half-plane zero and the double pole of the boost example, watch the zero move with the load and the duty ratio, and find the operating point that limits a feedback loop.
M4 · Design a CCM buck inductorSize a filter inductor for a buck in CCM with the core geometrical constant, finish its turns, gap and window in the magnetics designer, and find what fails first on a smaller core.
M5 · Flyback voltages and the primary clampWork out a flyback's switch and diode voltages, then add leakage inductance and size a primary clamp that keeps the switch within its rating, at a clamp loss you can state.
M6 · Match a source with a DCM flybackTreat a flyback in DCM with a fixed duty ratio as a loss-free resistor, match it to a linear source, and find where the match ends, when CCM takes over and the switch voltage rises.
M7 · A loss budget and a plan to measure itBuild the buck example's loss budget, find which loss dominates at full and at light load, check one by hand, and write a bench plan that says how each loss would be measured and what limits the measurement.
M8 · A sense chain that does not clipTake a current-sense chain that misses its error target at the low end, fix it, and keep its output below the amplifier's and the ADC's limits at full current, with a filter that suits the sampling rate.
M9 · Write a gotcha pageTurn a mistake of your own at the bench into a page for this site, from its symptom to its fix, with synthetic numbers, verified sources and the site's checks passing.

Your ticks stay in this browser only: no account, and nothing is sent.

The numbers in the examples, presets and exercises on this site are synthetic: round teaching values, not data from any real design.
